History

The first use of headguards for American football helmet was introduced in 1869 when George “Rose” Barkley, a halfback at Lafayette College, began using straps and earpieces to protect his ears. It’s not known exactly who introduced the first American football helment. Some sources indicate that James Naismith was the first to introduce the American football helment. The first version of the American football helmet was introduced in the early 1900s. The first hard leather helmet was introduced in 1917. Later, helmets were widely used to play American football. This was the beginning of the evolution of the helmet. The helmets are composed of leather with some padding on the inside. Since there was little padding, the helmets offered little to no protection for the players. Also, the helmets missed the face mask. Many players have been injured. Due to the great effort put in during the matches, the players overheated quickly, which made it uncomfortable to wear the helmet.

A company was founded in 1939 to manufacture American football helmets. This was Riddell from Chicago, Illinois. The first plastic American football helmets were produced during this time. Plastic helmets were more effective because these helmets retain their shape when an impact occurs. These helmets had more space for padding to protect the head and were more on comfortabl. A plastic visor was also provided with this helmet to protect the entire head. In the 1940s, helmets became a requirement in the NFL. Here they are still made of leather but with improved techniques. The NFL approved plastic and leather helmets but banned plastic helmets in 1948 because hard plastic posed an injury risk. The ban was lifted after a year. A year later, plastic helmets became common in NFL games.

In the 1950s, leather helments were discontinued and plastic helmets replaced them. Playing with a face mask has been recommended by the NFL since 1955. This ensured that the number of broken noses and teeth decreased and new rules were made to prohibit opponents from reaching for masks. The last players to play without a face mask were Pat Studstill, Garo Yepremian, and Tommy McDonald.
