History
The first use of headguards for American football helmet was introduced in 1869 when George “Rose” Barkley, a halfback at Lafayette College, began using straps and earpieces to protect his ears. It’s not known exactly who introduced the first American football helment. Some sources indicate that James Naismith was the first to introduce the American football helment. Other sources indicate that US Naval Academy midshipman, Joseph M. Reeves, with the first protective Moleskin headgear at the 1893 Army-Navy game.

This ensured that the number of broken noses and teeth decreased and new rules were made to prohibit opponents from reaching for masks. The last players to play without a face mask were Pat Studstill, Garo Yepremian, and Tommy McDonald.
